We met our fellow cruise members today on a city tour of Lisbon. Much of what we saw on the first half of the bus ride was what John and I saw on our walk yesterday.
But then we visited Be’lem (when our guide says this it sounds like Bethlehem) where we toured the Mosteiro Dos Jeronimos or Monestery of Saint Jerome. These buildings were built by the monks who were cloistered here in the 1500’s and it took over 100 years to build. The earthquake of 1755 did not damage these buildings. Only 40-45 monks lived here at that time but today just a handful call this home.
The dorm rooms are not used but the church is still active. We also saw the chapter house, confessionals, and the church.
The monastery was built along the Tagus River and nearby was a monument to the many mariners from Portugal and a small lighthouse.
