In this region of the Atlas Mountains there are several gorges with water running thru them that have been transformed into a green oasis of sorts. People have channeled the water from the streams to create beautiful and abundant gardens.
Stones mark the graves. Men have 2 stones, women have 1. |
There are unusual rock formations called Monkey Fingers, Muslim cemeteries, roses lining the garden plots and nomads living in the caves in the upper reaches of the hills. The rose petals are gathered to make rose scented cosmetics.
The road through this area is referred to as the Road of the Kasbah or The Holy Road and even the Salt Road. A Kasbah can be a fort or an estate. Salt and spices were brought through here on their way to the Holy Land.
High up in the gorge is where nomadic Berbers have created homes in caves near the streams. We visited one home where several adults and 3 or 4 small children lived and raised goats and sheep. The women and children sleep in the cave while the men sleep in a nearby tent.
We spent the night in Ourzazate (whah-za-zat). It is only 200 KM away from Morocco’s largest sand dunes and many big budget movies have been made here.
