As we leave Rabat we stop at the gate of Shalah a UNESCO Fort. It was built by the Berbers but inhabited by the Romans from the 1st century to 14th century. An earthquake in 1755 destroyed it and it became know as The City of the Dead because of all the bodies found there.
Speaking of Romans, we stopped in Volubilis to walk thru the Roman ruins on the hills overlooking the city. They lived here from 25 BC to 285 AD. It was a very modern city for its time with running water, sewers, baths, shops, and a temple dedicated to Zeus. Many of the mosaic floors were preserved by fallen ruins that covered them.
Our next stop was in Mouly Idriss, a Muslim city that until just a few years ago would not allow non-Muslims to enter. While there we visited a bread bakery where citizens bring their dough for the baker to bake. It was a wood fired oven that burned olive wood. Fresh meat is displayed in the open and is not refrigerated but if it is very fresh then no flies will be on it. Donkeys are used to collect trash every morning.
After lunch in Meknes we continued on to Fes late in the day.
