Continuing on to Er Foud

We broke camp and headed towards Er Foud. Along the way we stopped to view a water delivery system that directed the water from the Atlas Mountains in underground tunnels. They were built by slaves in the early century by digging access holes to the tunnel every 50 yards.  Twenty one mother-wells were dug in the mountains to send water down the tunnels.  These were used until a dam was built in the 1970’s and a better system was developed.
We stopped for lunch in a village that is completely covered with a roof.  Its called a ksar. There are restaurants, shops, a museum and homes under the roof. The roofs keep the village cooler in the extremely hot weather.
We then arrived at the DuTodra Gorges. We drove by the village called Quarzarate, built above the green areas on either side of the river. Family gardens cover the valley and there are beautiful rock formations further up the gorge.

We took a short but pleasant walk thru the gardens where they grow wheat, barley, corn, vegetables, fruit and nut trees like peaches, figs, almonds and pomegranate. Most of this is for personal use and to feed the animals with very little sold.
