We left Steamboat Springs early on Wednesday morning so we could get the oil changed while in Silverthorne before heading to one of our favorite campgrounds near Vail. Gore Creek Campground is a national forest site with no hook ups but is only four miles from Vail and only about a 10 minute drive from the condo where our friends are staying on the west side of Vail. We got a nice site, took a quick nap and then headed over to John and Susanna's place for the afternoon. We had supper at Sweet Basil, one of the oldest and a best places to dine in Vail.
Today we got up really early and went on a hiking/fishing trip with our friends. We drove up past Minturn to the Cross Creek trail head. John and John took their fly fishing gear and we walked up hill about 2 miles or so and then cut over to the creek where we found an ideal place to plant ourselves for the day. Just a short hike up the creek, Susanna and I found some beautiful cascades and waterfalls leading to a quiet pool where we just knew the men would find some trout. After we told them about it, we cooled our feet in the water then had lunch. Susanna and I couldn't sit still, so we volunteered to hike on up the trail in search of a lake we saw on the map. About a mile or so later we did find the lake. It was a really pretty setting but the lake was eaten up with grass so we didn't think it would be worth the guys coming up there to fish. We did see a deer and some ptarmigan swimming over the grass. The guys' fish tales were fun to hear as we hiked back to the car. Susanna and I figure we walked about 7 miles all together. The guys, some less!
Hot tub, beer, wine, naps and dinner at their condo. An almost perfect day with very good friends!
