We made a huge mistake today by trying to hike the "most difficult" trail in Vail Valley. We deluded ourselves into thinking that we could handle this trail as it was ONLY 4.5 miles one way. The bad part was it climbed 2000 vertical feet in the two miles we hiked. We started at 8600' elevation which put us close to 11,000 feet of elevation when we said "Enough" and turned around.
I can't even tell you it was a pretty hike because the only part I saw was my feet picking their way along the 18 inch wide path full of rocks, roots, and loose soil. It was brutal! We had lunch sitting on rocks and then slogged our way back down, slipping, stumbling and side-stepping on the loose dirt. When we did stop to catch our breath, which was about every 15-20 minutes, we were surrounded by Aspen and pine trees and the view across the valley was about the same.
We are now sitting in the RV, with sore legs, aching all over and contemplating going to bed at 8:30! We are really all done in!
